• • • Abstract Chapter 1 of this book discusses the evolution of plants from the Pre-Cambrian era considering the starting time of alternation of generations. In the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras, we will discuss the transitions from homospory to heterospory and the formation of the egg cell and the pollen grain as well as the evolution of seed plants.
At the end of this chapter we will discuss the evolution of the angiosperms (flowering plants) and the sexuality transitions and the reproductive strategies. Also, the evolution of the unisexuality, self-incompatibility systems, selfing, and mixed mating systems will be discussed considering their evolutionary implications.
